This past weekend, after depleting my bbq , I felt the need to dig more pig. I gathered up two of my favorite things and whipped up a grilled sandwich combo; chocolate and bacon on sourdough.

I like to keep recipes simple and you’ll find this easy to prepare. I used “foodie” ingredients and, depending on your locale, you may or may not encounter difficulty in locating these specific brands. Nonetheless, you should be able to find suitable replacements for this easy-to-make and satisfying diversion.

• Butter two slices of sourdough bread. I used Life in Provence butter with sea salt.

• 1-2 oz. chocolate square. I used Scharffenberger 41% Cacao Milk Chocolate. Next time, I’ll use 70% bittersweet.

• Four slices of cooked bacon. I used Niman Ranch Applewood Smoked Bacon, an uncured, thick sliced bacon.

• Put chocolate and bacon on sourdough bread and cook like a grilled cheese sandwich. In order to get a nice melted chocolate, I used a low heat setting.

You could use this sandwich as a cookout dessert or appetizer. Certainly, your guests will revel in the novelty of a chocolate and bacon sandwich. Otherwise, this bad boy makes a great midnight snack.

Dan Christy, who’ll put bbq sauce on just about anything, sent me this recipe yesterday. While this recipe is meant to be humor,  it does illustrate one truism (at least in our minds). John Daly BBQ Vienna Sausage

Place sausage on a plate. Arrange the sausages like they might at the  21 Club or Alfred’s Steakhouse. After all, presentation is everything.

Sprinkle John Daly BBQ rub to finish up your dinner party appetizer. Wow your community’s upper echelon. By the way, if you serve beer with this gourmet dish, use a fluted champagne glass. This adds an elegant touch to the presentation. One way or another, you’ll be the talk of the town.

Unfortunately, no such delicacy existed. Until, this week.

Dan Christy tested and developed a bbq pizza sauce. Pulled pork was added with a three cheese blend whipped up by Christian Georgi. A true team effort.

Earlier this week, the John Daly BBQ Pizza made an appearance (and again last night) at John Daly’s Restaurant.  Customers raved about the bbq pizza.

Here’s your great tasting idea, John. We tried saving a slice or two, but the pizzas disappeared faster than a golf ball in a pond.

We thought about sending a pizza delivery guy, but remembered John’s in Italy and delivery charges would be several thousand dollars. Plus, there’s the delivery guy’s tip.

Personally, I’ve sent fellow golfers ducking behind golf bags and had a ball lodge 6 ft. up on a palm tree trunk. There’s no doubt I could qualify as a bonafide golf hazard.

Is this day in honor of underwater boats or a deli sandwich? Beats me.

Maybe, we should celebrate THE SUBMARINE, a mythical Great White Shark which lives in False Bay, Cape Town, South Africa.  So large it shows up on sonar, the Submarine is reputed to have swallowed entire boat motors. I guess if the boaters had fed Mr. Submarine two or three slabs of John Daly ribs, he  wouldn’t have eaten the motor. Aren’t you glad this shark doesn’t cruise the Gulf of Mexico?

Now, that I’ve had my fun writing through Guinness goggles…the SUBMARINE is a hoax, an urban legend of mythic proportions. Okay, now we can return to St. Patrick’s Day and Submarine Day festivities.
